In the novel, three lives come together in an eternal triangle: Zaira, peasant girl destined to serve father, brother, husband; Livietta, a polished young lady who dutifully marries the aristocrat chosen by her father; and the rakish Leonardo who marries Livietta for her money, then falls irremediably in love with Zaira when she is taken on by his household as companion to his wife.
