Spiders and snakes were legitimate menaces to society at one time, maybe even most of the era of human existence. They have become ingrained in our psyches as enormous risks to avoid at all costs. Car wreck fatalities have only been around since motorized vehicles have—roughly the 1890s, which is practically yesterday in terms of human consciousness.
