From the winner of the 2022 Los Angeles Times Book Award, As the Crow Flies is Véronique Tadjo's evocative collection of short stories.
Writing in exquisite, poetic prose, Véronique Tadjo weaves together a rich tapestry of characters — all nameless and faceless — as they tell their stories of parting and return, losing and gaining, suffering and healing.
Like a bird in flight, Tadjo travels across a borderless landscape composed of tales of daily existence, news reports, allegories and ancestral myths, creating a lyrical and moving portrait of the interconnectedness of human life.

One of the greatest things literature does is allow us to imagine; to identify with situations and people who live in completely different circumstances, in countries all over the world

To the ends of the earth
    With no shortcuts
    Do so
    As the crow flies.

I must leave behind denials and errors. I will think of him with great lassitude. I will no longer know his whereabouts, or what has become of him. I will no longer know whether the memory has faded or whether his pain still persists.
I wanted to believe in fairy tales, believe I could journey on the back of a camel and spend my afternoons sipping tea.
Now, I have to start all over again.
