1. Write down any tendency you have to overindulge in addictive things: alcohol, drugs, food, sex, cigarettes, gambling, the need to control, to name a few.
2. Every day for seven days note how these problems are affecting your life. Be honest. Just a few sentences at the end of each day will tell you if you are in control of yourself or not. (If you are too hungover, high, or coughing too hard to hold a pen to write, you are out of balance big time.)
3. On the eighth day read what you have written over the past week. Do you notice any pattern? It should be clear if you have an addiction. Interestingly, most people do have some form of addiction.
4. Make a list of what you’d like to quit. Now you should be ready to decide which is the most important addiction to overcome at this point in your life. Underline it! Do not try to force yourself to tackle more than one challenge at a time. You will defeat yourself if you make things too difficult. At this point you must begin to act upon your decision.
Seven is the number that is known as the source of all change. In this exercise, seven days should be the proper time you need to face the fact that you have a problem.
