Welcome to our son Felix’s fertile five-year-old imagination, grounded (mostly) in fact. Please note that this is a book of fiction — a lot of details are make-believe. They were told to me through his eyes at that time, with all the information he had. And if a tiny bit of a book is make-believe, then all of it must be called make-believe.
The book is above all FUN! We had a good time working on it. Over a year or so, Felix would catch me writing histories of German and Italian submarines. Like any good child, he wanted to help Daddy, to show what he learned, and to add something to my work. He drew his own charts for me. Though I have lived on islands, he has been on the mainland, and wanted to show me what he learned about land battles. So he did. I learned a lot, and I think that the reader will as well.
