The ultimate goal of Dante’s travels is heaven. However, the first step of his journey is a passage through hell, which, according to Medieval ideas, is located within the earth. The Roman poet Virgil serves as his guide. He witnesses the punishment of those impenitent sinners who committed such sins as adultery, avarice, anger, suicide, treachery, etc. The deepest part of hell is occupied by the devil. He has three heads and chews a sinner with each of his three mouths. Not surprisingly, Judas Iscariot is one of them., but the other two might surprise you.
