La Regenta is a realist novel by Spanish author Leopoldo Alas y Ureña. It tells about a woman married to an older man of high power and property but feeling unhappy in this marriage. To escape from the grey routine of emotionless married life, the main character accepts courtesy from another man, not being aware that he's not her only admirer.
