    Millard Fillmore was a self-educated man. Two years after being president, he traveled to Britain. At Oxford University, as is their tradition with visiting heads of state, Fillmore was offered an honorary degree. He turned down this prestigious offer by saying “no man should, in my judgment, accept a degree he cannot read.” Oxford degrees were at that time written in Latin.
