Life and Adventures of Jack Engle: An Auto-Biography; in Which the Reader Will Find Some Familiar Characters is a city mystery novel by Walt Whitman. It was first published anonymously in serial form in the newspaper the New York Sunday Dispatch from March 14 to April 18, 1852, and other was advertised in The New York Times as a “Rich Revelation” and an “Auto-Biography.” It was unknown and not republished until in 2017 in the academic journal Walt Whitman Quarterly Review after it was rediscovered by University of Houston graduate student Zachary Turpin as a work by Whitman
A quick read to start the spring. The rags of a rich story, very similar to Dickens, took place in New York City in the 1800's. With humor and wit, this story is a nice visit to Whitman before he became the writer we all know and love.
