Jack Benny was a comedian in the middle of the Twentieth Century. Much of his comedy was rooted in the running gag that he was very stingy with his money. In one sketch, a mugger approaches Jack Benny, gun drawn and says, “Your money or your life!” A pause ensues. “Well?” the would-be thief demands. “I’m thinking!” Benny replies.

The church, in a way, agrees with Jack: “your money or your life” is a choice well worth thinking about, especially in a culture that encourages us to measure our worth by how much we have or earn.

These sessions, all based on Scripture, invite us to think deeply and prayerfully about the connections between God and wealth, and how the money choices we make can lead us toward or away from the life God wants for us. No matter our income, wrestling with “your money or your life” is important for us all.

The struggle we face in trying to make a living within this highly competitive and uncertain economy often compromises the time we have available to truly understand the subtle ways our call to follow Christ influences not just the career paths we choose but the day-to-day decisions we make in our economic lives.
