Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.

I decided to read this after rewatching the Ghibli movie billions of times. And it's worth it and explained so many things that the movie couldn't. Actually, it's kinda surprised me when i finally learned about Howl's personality because the movie isn't revealing everything. I came from "Howl is a kind of prince-like i would love to marry" into "let's just be friend with Howl lol" . It's not like i was disappointed, but more like surprised? I've been having this "howl is a gentleman and sweet kind of wizard" for many years! I should have read the book sooner. Anyway, i love this so much! I love all the characters, ofc especially Shopie and Howl ♥️ the way of making the female lead as grandmother is always so unique and up until now i haven't read a single book that challenged themselves with this kind of thing. Thank you for creating such an amazing story!

I'm about halfway through it at the moment but so far it has not disappointed me! I was introduced to this series by the movie (as I've noticed most of the readers are) and I love that each one is unique. While the movie has taken quite a few artistic liberities and changed the story a bit; I can still see the inspiration from this book.

Sophie is far more enjoyable and relatable in the book, Michaels character is completely different, Calcifer is still a witty sass, and Howl is definitely more of a mystery and I seriously love that. Despite the movie setting some of these characters images in my mind I can still separate them and that's the sign of a good author.

One of the only downsides to seeing the movie first is that every time the characters speak I hear in the actors voice instead of the characters. Can't wait to get back into it!

I really liked this book as it gave me deeper thoughts on what I might do in life and how I might be successful, seeing as I am the youngest of my family. It was also mystical and gave me Harry Potter vibes. In conclusion, I really liked it and would take it with me on holiday or when I go out!

“I hope your bacon burns,” Calcifer said, muffled under the pan.
  • Aldair Apodacahas quoted9 years ago
Calcifer went to sleep, in the way fires do, sinking among the logs until they were rosy cylinders plated with white ash, with only a hint of blue and green deep underneath.

“No, but I was thinking that people who run away from everything deserve every cold they get,” Sophie said.
