“What We Believe … and Why” is a study of basic Baptist beliefs. The book includes twenty-six lessons, which cover the twenty-one doctrinal statements of the American Baptist Association (ABA). These Bible truths include such topics as: God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, Satan, creation, salvation, baptism and the church (which is a local, visible entity). Lessons on Jesus Christ include His deity, crucifixion, resurrection and return. One lesson is given to the Baptist distinctive of the eternal security of the believer. There are lessons regarding the Office of Pastor and the Office of Deacon. Church associations and civil government are addressed. The series begins with the lesson “What We Believe About Love” — the great commandment of Jesus Christ.
Each lesson includes Scripture references and discussion questions. This study is ideal for small groups or for personal study — and even for an introductory seminary class. New church members and new believers will find the book beneficial.
These truths are presented from a conservative viewpoint. The Missionary Baptist churches that make up the fellowship of the ABA are traditional in beliefs and practices, and orthodox in their interpretations of the Bible. Bogard Press, the publishing house of the ABA, has provided Bible curriculum for over a century, using the King James Version of the Bible and remaining “Always True to the Word.”
