Anthony Gay spent 22 years in solitary confinement and faced 108 total years in prison. His journey began when he allegedly stole a dollar bill and a hat during a neighborhood fight as a teenager. During his time in solitary, he turned to writing. While he was isolated from most human contact, words comforted him. His daily iterations to lawyers, college professors, activists and himself gave him hope. Hope kept him alive. Then, a miracle happened. He got out.
