Milan, 1993. Lena, a young Armenian woman, has survived the horrors of the Spitak earthquake that struck the northern region of her country, then part of the Soviet Union, in 1988. Driven by poverty and hardship, Lena finally flees to Italy, where she finds a job as a nanny for the son of a woman named Alice. Alice is a brilliant anchorwoman and the wife of a doctor, a prominent member of Milan’s Armenian community. Soon, a deep friendship bonds the two women. Lena tells Alice of her troubled past, touching on the plight of Armenia’s persecuted and oppressed people. For her part, Alice shares with Lena the ugly secrets hidden behind the façade of her picture-perfect life. The relationship between them becomes so strong that together they make dramatic decisions that will change their lives forever.
