what made a person cross the frontier of safety? It wasn’t consciousness. Anger, I thought. Enough to blind.

Muffled rage stalks like the wind, sudden and invisible. People don’t fear the wind until it fells a tree. Then, they say it’s too much.

I wasn’t sure about the extent of foreign intervention in our local politics—CIA-backed coups and assassinations included—but was it too much to expect other countries to take an interest in our well being, if most of our stolen wealth was invested in their economies?

We accepted the world we were born into, though we knew what felt right and wrong from the start. The protesting and detesting could come afterward with confirmation that our lives could have been better, but the acceptance was always there.
