Why Do We Have to Go Through the Torture of Auditions?

Because no one has ever devised a better way to cast. If you think of one, let us know.

What to Wear for an Audition?

    Wear what is appropriate.

Always wear to the second audition (and any subsequent auditions, no matter how many) the same thing you wore to the first audition. The reason? Because auditors frequently make mental (or written) notes of what you are wearing to help them identify you. If you change costumes, they frequently get confused. Jerry Robbins asked me at the end of a day of auditions why I hadn't brought back the girl in the orange sweater. I had, but she was wearing a purple dress. I'm not sure we ever did get that straightened out. You can help the auditors by wearing the same thing every time you audition

At least give yourself the added information you get from doing a reading. Then if you are absolutely sure you can't do the role (and you're probably wrong if you're worth your salt as an actor), then turn it down

Don't decide in advance you don't want a role. Actors don't know what is right for them.

    You need the practice

I think an actor should audition every damn chance he gets.
