“The Soul of Man under Socialism” by Oscar Wilde is an essay that perfectly encapsulates the famous writer's ideals. A critique on capitalism and how charity functioned as a sort of prison in a capitalist society, Wilde takes the opportunity to describe a libertarian world that leaves people freer to change their economic situations and better their lives in a way that the current society doesn't allow. Though written in 1891, capitalism is still up for debate today, thus the story may be over a century old, but it's still very relevant.

Socialism would relieve us from that sordid necessity of living for others which, in the present condition of things, presses so hardly upon almost everybody.
