When two people learn they've got about a year to live they choose to do something meaningful with the rest of their lives rather than die in some hospital bed. Visiting a city near the American space agency launch facilities in Florida they read about volunteers needed to help conduct research on a space project that will test the endurance of the most fit individual, not terminally ill strangers from opposite ends of the world.
Fast-track training, a cramped experimental spacecraft, an astronomical secret nobody is supposed to know about, and two people about to die are brought together in a unique way for a One Way mission. Their four-month journey will take Michiko and RJ to a point in space near Mars for a single goal: To deflect a ball of rock, metal, ice, and carbon from its path to destroy the Earth using their spaceship, the Caelum, with both of them still on board.
