A 3rd generation black slave, Cora dreamt of living her life in freedom and finding her mother who abandoned her at a very young age. While serving on a Georgia cotton plantation, Cora was approached one day by another slave named Caesar – who offered a glimpse of freedom at such a dark time.
Although hesitant at first, Cora found her courage and unfortunately killed someone in her desperate attempt for escape. Her journey to freedom was never easy – getting subjected to pretend who she’s not and going from one nightmare to another. Cora’s persistent attempt to be free from bondage was almost halted by her relentless captor, Ridgeway; she had to muster all her strength to evade his clutches and avoid persecution.
Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad” details the hauntingly numerous horrors of black slavery in the Southern part of the Americas as it is visibly featured in this award-winning literary masterpiece and also served as a conscious message of white supremacy that existed for decades.
