The author of this work, Edmondo De Amicis, fell in love with the Pinerolo area during his summer holidays between 1879 and 1884. Already an established writer, he dedicated the pages of Alle Porte d'Italia (At the Gates of Italy) to these lands while he was still preparing his best-known novel, Cuore.
