Operations generates data; we all have lots of it, streaming in from monitors, probes, and agents on potentially thousands of systems. But just having data isn’t enough. How do you make sense of that data? How do you discover the story that the data is telling you, and use it to understand your environment? What happens when you combine operational data with other kinds of data--for example, business data? For years, we’ve used data in relatively simple ways: setting off alarms when some parameter goes out of spec. But there are many more interesting things that we can do. Data has a story it wants to tell, we just have to listen.
