Mel Romans loves reading comics, especially those featuring his all-time hero Gargoyle: Champion of the Universe. He reads them in his English class, which annoys his teacher Miss Trent, and he makes up his own comic strip when he should be doing his homework.
When Mel and his best friend Rod pay Gargoyle's creator Ambrose Alexander a night-time visit, they make an important discovery – but have to leave pretty quickly when the situation turns nasty.
Many strange things happen after that night and Mel begins to believe that he will have to take on the role of superhero to defeat those who are trying to threaten his local community of Vale River.
