'Listen Carefully' is one of a series of 5 books which focus on developing music across the primary/elementary curriculum. Ideas are designed for the generalist music teacher. However, a special feature is that of suggesting ways in which visiting musicians can support and liaise with schools to enhance the music curriculum. The activities begin with simple pitch awareness and exploration activities, and progress into recording short pitched and melodic phrases using simple symbols (rather than staff notation initially)on tuned percussion (or other instruments). There are opportunities for composition and group presentations. The materials progress to encourage composing of longer phrases and accompaniments, and from creating sequences to an understanding of simple musical form. Throughout, there are tips for visiting musicians such as peripatetic teachers to support generalist class teachers. In this way the materials promote the concept of liaison between musicians and schools.
