In the Western world he is better known as Saladin. He was a Kurdish Muslim. He was the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Saladin was the founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty.

Saladin was the leader of the Muslim opposition to the Franks and other European Crusaders in the Levant.

When he was at the top of his power, his empire included Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, Hejaz, Yemen, and some parts of North Africa.

Under the leadership of Saladin, his armies successfully subdued the Crusaders at the Battle of Hattin, and consequently he was able to recapture Palestine. The land of Palestine had been seized from the Fatimid Egyptians the Crusaders 88 years before.
