The Southern Reach called the last expedition the twelfth, but Control had counted the rings, and it was actually the thirty-eighth iteration, including six “eleventh” expeditions.

just evaporated into their constituent atoms, possibly returned to their most primeval state in agonizing pain.

I think even if that happened, judging from the footage the disappearance happened extremely fast, so they probably dies so fast that their brain could even register any pain.

But mostly because the Southern Reach had sent expedition after expedition in through a door they hadn’t created, into God knew what—hoping that everything would be all right, that they would come home,

Trial and error. That’s what you do if you are at the end of your knowledge. Just go for it and test things out and hope for the best. That’s how most scientific breakthroughs happened dude. Many scientists died for answers.

what I mean is—there’s no evidence that the … presence … in Area X also generated the border.”

Maybe something is trying to shield humans from destruction of the something that is changing organisms in Area X. So we have two extraterrestrial forces that came to earth with two different goals/behaviours. A nice theory.

The Voice was, as ever, gruff and disguised by a filter. Disguised purely for security or because Control might recognize it?

Hmmm not him talking about his mother and then wondering if the voice might be hide their identity bc of him… so is it his mother who sent him there to report back to her? In wouldn’t be surprised. From what I understand of her, her career/passion is more important to her than family/any sentiments

Just close your eyes and you will remember me.”
I do, Dad. I do remember you, but you’re fading. There’s too much interference, and all of this is becoming much too real.

Control had the feeling he did not want to see the rooms the hardware techs worked in, the miserable languishing corpses of the computers of past decades, the chaotic unintentional museum of plastic and wires and circuit boards. Or perhaps the fish did rot from the head, and only the director had decomposed.

He had a sudden vision of her in Area X with the twelfth expedition, just wandering through the wilderness with no real destination: a tall, husky, forty-year-old woman who looked older. Silent, conflicted, torn. So devoured by her responsibility that she’d allowed herself to believe she owed it to the people she sent into the field to join them. Why had no one stopped her? Had no one cared about her?

Why had the biologist returned to an empty lot rather than her house? The other two had returned to something personal, to a place that held an emotional attachment. But the biologist had stood for hours and hours in an overgrown lot, oblivious to anything around her.
