Throughout this book you will read stories from both the
monastic tradition of the church, from which most of the disciplines
highlighted here come, and from contemporary collegiate
ministries, where these practices are being carried
out today. After extensive interviews with colleagues who
work as chaplains and campus ministers, I found myself with
far too many stories for just one book. If what you read here
inspires you, or if you wonder why I didn't include the spiritual
disciplines that have given life to your collegiate ministry,
I encourage you to write me—I'd love to get to know you
and your ministry. Who knows? Perhaps another book will
be in order down the road. For now, I had to limit myself to
the eight most compelling examples of how classical spiritual
disciplines are being used in collegiate ministry, framed by the stories of those who have practiced them in real life. I
hope that you find these stories compelling and illuminating.
