National Historic Landmarks are touchstones of our collective past that still resonate with our present. The six New England states have nearly 400 such places. However, important doesn't always translate into interesting and so the authors have selected for the reader, the top 100 National Historic Landmarks in New England––those with the most intriguing and rewarding history. In addition to historic houses, the tall ships, and such quirky spots as one of the country's oldest weather stations, the list includes three carousels (Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts; Watch Hill, Rhode Island; and East Providence, Rhode Island) and that all-important sandy beach. In fact, Revere Beach in Massachusetts was the first public beach in the United States, and it's still a bustling strand a quick trolley ride from downtown Boston. Based on a series of articles feature in the Boston Globe called “National Historic Landmarks in New England, the book will appeal to the historical enthusiast, the armchair traveler, and both local visitors and tourists alike.
