First, look for historical links between typefaces and try combinations in which the features of each font underpin its role in your layout. For example, an early grotesque slab for headlines with an elegant transitional serif for the text. Second, look at the proportions of different typefaces and select font combinations with harmonious links between, say, character heights and widths. Third, try to pick up on any qualities that different typefaces might share, such as elegant stems and bowls, consistent stroke thickness, and so on. The important thing is to identify exactly what role each font has to play in the layout and take care to stick to the plan. If you don’t, you’ll end up with typographic soup. TS
