Joshua Jones (he/him) is a queer, autistic writer and artist from Llanelli, South Wales. He is known for his fiction and poetry, which have been published in Poetry Wales, Broken Sleep Books, and Nawr Magazine, among others.
He has been commended by the Poetry Society and twice shortlisted for the Rhys Davies Prize award. Literature Wales recognized him as an Emerging Writer in 2023. Jones is currently collaborating with the British Council to connect Welsh and Vietnamese queer writers.
Jones attended Solent University in Southampton, obtaining a BA (Double Hons) in English & Media Studies with a 2:1. He continued his studies at Bath Spa University, completing an MA in Creative Writing with distinction in 2020. Currently, he is pursuing a PGCE/PCET in Adult Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Joshua Jones' creative work extends beyond writing to include visual art. His 'poetic installations' have been exhibited at Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Turner House Penarth, and Cardiff Umbrella. His publications include Fistful of Flowers (2022), a collaborative work with Caitlin Flood-Molyneux, and his short story collection, Local Fires (2023).
Jones makes his debut as a short story writer with Local Fires (2023). The collection explores life in Llanelli, South Wales, through interconnected tales. Characters like Chloe, who seeks fame at a local talent show, and William, who contemplates his autism diagnosis, navigate their lives with sardonic and melancholic undertones. The stories delve into themes of gender, sexuality, toxic masculinity, and neurodivergence, capturing the essence of a small town with universal reach.
Jones' poignant observation of his characters' misadventures culminates in an incendiary finale, both literally and figuratively. "Local Fires is a testament to the vibrant, multifaceted lives of people living in ex-industrial working-class areas," says Jones. This collection marks the emergence of a unique new voice in Welsh literature, combining sardonic humor with deep emotional resonance.
In addition to his writing and art, Jones co-founded and runs Dyddiau Du, a social hub and community library in Cardiff. This initiative reflects his commitment to fostering community and creativity.
