Deborah Feldman

Deborah Feldman was born and raised in the Hasidic community of Satmar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her marriage was arranged at the age of 17, and her son was born two years later. At the age of 25 she published the New York Times Bestselling memoir, UNORTHODOX: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots (Simon and Schuster, 2012) and two years later she followed up with EXODUS, a memoir of post-religious alienation and identity (Blue Rider Press, 03/2014.) Currently she is working in two mediums, film and writing, in an effort to learn more about women's relationships with their bodies and how they perceive themselves as influenced by the different cultures they were raised in. She is most interested in exploring the intersection between globalization, religion, and female identity.
