James Naughtie

James Naughtie is a British broadcaster, journalist, and news presenter for the BBC. He is also the author of several books, including biographies of James Callaghan and Queen Elizabeth II.

Alexander James Naughtie was born in Milltown of Rothiemay, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. James studied English at the University of Aberdeen and then attended Syracuse University in New York.

James Naughtie began his career as a journalist in 1975 at the Aberdeen Press & Journal, moving to the London offices of The Scotsman in 1977.

He worked for The Washington Post and The Guardian but soon moved into radio presenting. In 1994 he became one of the main presenters of Radio 4's Today news program and worked there for twenty-one years.

Naughtie has also presented other programs such as Bookclub and The Reunion and has covered major news events such as the Gulf War and the 9/11 attacks.

Naughtie's first novel, The Madness of July, was published in 2014. It is a sophisticated thriller with Will Flemyng, foreign office minister as the protagonist, about loyalty, survival, and family rivalry deep in the Cold War.

The debut work was critically-acclaimed and was followed by Paris Spring (2016), the second book in the Will Flemyng series. The third installment in the series, The Spy Across the Water, is scheduled for March 2023.

He also writes nonfiction books. In 2020, he published his memories On the Road: Adventures from Nixon to Trump. It covers his working experiences as a correspondent for the BBC in America from the 1970s to the present day.
