At the heart of Edgar A. Poe’s work is the anguish, sadness and extreme difficulties he experienced during his short and tragic life. Even in his darkest hours, when he was deprived by circumstances, and by other people, of the basic necessities of life, even forced to beg for money from friends and strangers in the street, he took pen to paper to create these poems.

These poems echo his lonely spirit, manifesting the deeply anchored feelings and realities of love, death, betrayal, dreams and fantasies. The darkness of his life and his own spirit were the inspiration for his creative works of poems and short stories, and defined him in his own time, as they do still.
