Philip Matyszak

Dr. Philip (Maty) Matyszak is a former journalist who became hooked on ancient history. Hу has written several bestselling titles on Ancient Rome, including Ancient Rome on Five Denarii a Day (2007) and The Greek and Roman Myths (2010).

Philip Matyszak earned BA (Hons) from Royal Holloway, University of London, and an MA from St. John's, University of Oxford. He was a soldier in Africa, a journalist in Leeds and London, and studied for his doctorate at St John's College in Oxford. He has also taught in Milan, Italy.

"I've been interested in the ancient world since my parents purchased me a set of little plastic hoplites at some point in the late 1960s. Since then, my interest has shifted from the Greek to the Roman world, though it has been shifting back again. Over the past forty years, I've been reading, wargaming, researching, teaching, and writing about antiquity to the extent that I sometimes feel a bit uncomfortable in the 21st Century." Matyszak says.

He currently works as a tutor for Madingley Hall Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge, teaching a course on Ancient Rome. He is also preparing courses for the eLearning program at the Institute of Continuing Education at Madingley Hall.

His most recent work is Julius Caesar in Egypt: Cleopatra and the War in Alexandria (2023).

Philip Matyszak lives in British Columbia, Canada.
