Benedict Lombe

Benedict Lombe is a British Congolese writer and theatre-maker. She is best known for her plays and contributions to theatre and screen. Her influences include writers Lynn Nottage, Debbie Tucker Green, and Paula Vogel.

Her debut play, Lava, premiered at the Bush Theatre in 2021. It was her first work to gain widespread attention. Lava is a story about a woman renewing her British passport, only to discover much more about her identity and history.

This play received the 2022 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the 2022 Offies Best Performance Piece. Additionally, Lombe won the Book and Lyrics Recognition Award at the 2021 Black British Theatre Awards.

Following the success of Lava, Lombe wrote Shifters, a play set to premiere at the Bush Theatre in 2024. Directed by Lynette Linton, Shifters explores the dynamics between two childhood friends whose sudden reunion forces them to confront their past and future. The play promises a blend of romance, conflict, and memory.

Moreover, Lombe has been active in screenwriting, with commissions to develop an original feature film for BBC Films and other projects for television.

She has worked on projects such as Les Bills, an adventurous feature film, and We The Defiant, a spec script for BBC Drama Room. Furthermore, Lombe participated in the writing shadow scheme for Waterloo Road — Series 11 and was part of the writer's room for Lifters.
