Neil Hegarty is an Irish author and essayist. His writing includes novels, biographies, history, essays, literary criticism, and short fiction. He also is the author of the biography of David Frost and The Story of Ireland.
Neil Hegarty was born and grew up in Derry, Northern Ireland. He studied English at Trinity College Dublin, receiving his PhD in 1998.
His latest book, Impermanence (2022), was produced as an RTE radio series in 2023. This collection of essays reflects on a century of Irish independence and partition.
His debut novel, Inch Levels, was published by Head of Zeus in 2016. It was published in French as La Surface De L'eau by Gallimard/Éditions Joëlle Losfeld in 2022.
His second, The Jewel (2019), centered on the art world, featuring an artist who has become an art thief, an obsessive curator, and a specialist in art thefts.
Neil Hegarty is a member of the Society of Authors, Irish PEN, and the Irish Writers' Centre. He is also a regular literary reviewer in the Irish Times and Dublin Review of Books.
Neil Hegarty currently lives in Dublin.
