Kirsty Applebaum

Kirsty Applebaum is an English children's author born in Essex. Her debut novel, The Middler (2019), was nominated for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and the UKLA Book Award.

Kirsty Applebaum was born in 1970 in Essex and grew up in Hampshire. She held various jobs, including railway re-signalling and teaching Pilates. Applebaum also worked in menial positions before turning to writing. She graduated from Bath Spa University's MA in Writing for Young People in 2017.

Her first novel, The Middler (2019), was an atmospheric, dystopian middle-grade adventure. It was followed by Troofriend (2020) and The Life and Time of Lonnie Quicke (2021). In 2022, she began the Princess Minna series for children aged 4+, with illustrations by Sahar Haghgoo. In 2023, Applebaum contributed a short story, Wolf Moon, to Read, Scream, Repeat, a collection of spooky tales for children aged 9–12.

Applebaum lives in Winchester, near the butterfly fields that inspired the setting of The Middler. She draws on her diverse job experiences and childhood to influence her writing. She often says, "One of the great things about being an author is that it doesn't matter what you did beforehand. You can use anything and everything to influence your writing."

The Middler had a claustrophobic feel by design, with the story taking place over a week to heighten the sense of being in a small, oppressive space. Applebaum explains, "I wanted the chapters to feel short and readable, and I also wanted each one to end in such a way that the reader would want to start reading the next."
