W.G. Morris

Peter W.G. Morris was a British educator and author. Peter was an Emeritus Professor of Construction and Project Management at University College London. W.G. Morris has authored over 130 scientific papers and written, edited, and contributed to various books written for scientists and practitioners alike.

W.G. Morris was widely recognized for his academic contributions. He held several prestigious fellowships, including the Institute of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institute of Building, and the Royal Society of Arts. Peter W.G. Morris was also a former Chairman, Vice President, and Fellow (Hon) of the Association for Project Management (APM).

Throughout his career, W.G. Morris worked in executive employment, consulting, and academic roles. He was the Executive Director of INDECO, a consultancy specializing in the commercial management of projects, from 1996 to 2009.

Before these appointments, he was a Professor of Project Management at UMIST, Director of the Major Projects Association at the University of Oxford, and a board member of Bovis Ltd., a global construction company. He worked on international projects in the Middle East, Latin America, Russia, the UK, and the USA.

As a qualified Civil Engineer, Peter's interest in the reality of projects and their management led him to study for one of the first PhDs in project management.

He combined theoretical thinking with practical experience and empirical data to develop a new conception, "the management of projects," which challenged the traditional technocentric, delivery-focused approach to project management.

W.G. Morris argued that project managers needed to recognize the role they play in the more strategic aspects of the project, and he used evidence drawn from projects across different sectors and geographies to demonstrate the issues that could allow a project to succeed or fail were often set well in advance of the appointment of project managers.

Peter authored over 130 scholarly papers and books, including The Anatomy of Major Projects (1987), The Wiley Guide to Managing Projects (2004), Translating Corporate Strategy into Project Strategy (2004), The Oxford Handbook on Project Management (2009), Climate Change and What the Project Management Profession Should Be Doing About It (2017), and others.

In 2016, his work was honored by a Festschrift in the International Journal of Project Management.

His latest book, Reconstructing Project Management (2017), traces the development of project management as a discipline. It provides a detailed description of its key elements and examines how the discipline should be applied to the problems facing society.

Peter W.G. Morris passed away at the age of 74.
