Eirin Thompson

Eirin Thompson is a Northern Irish author specialising in contemporary women's fiction. She is best known for her novel Stranger Than Fiction (2024) and was recognised as 'Writer of the Week' in 2022. Thompson's writing often focuses on everyday life and complex relationships.

Thompson began her career as a newspaper journalist before turning to fiction. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Queen's University, Belfast.

She has written numerous short stories for women's magazines, often featuring relatable characters and authentic settings. Thompson lives in County Armagh with her husband and cat and is the mother of three grown-up children. Her personal life and environment often inspire her work.

When discussing her approach to serialised fiction, Thompson said: "The very first thing is to choose a good setting — ideally one with lots of 'traffic' so that there is plenty of opportunity to meet a wide range of characters. She believes familiarity with a setting adds to the authenticity of her stories.

Thompson's first series was set in a local weekly newspaper, drawing on her experience as a journalist. She emphasised the importance of understanding the "rhythms of the year and the range of stories likely to be covered" in such a setting.

Her novel Stranger Than Fiction explores the lives of characters such as Frankie, Gloria and others in 'Randlesford'. The story revolves around Frankie's death and the subsequent unravelling of secrets and jealousies within the community. The book explores themes of betrayal, ambition and the lengths people will go to protect their secrets.

Eirin Thompson also writes as E.D. Thompson.
