“What are we doing here?”

Michael leaned forward and brushed his lips against mine. Then he pulled back and studied my face. Whatever he saw there, he liked.

“Thank you,” he said. “That’s all I needed to know.”

“So take whatever time you need. Figure out how you feel. Figure out if Dean makes you feel the way I do, if he’ll ever let you in, and if you want him to, because the next time my lips touch yours, the next time your hands are buried in my hair—the only person you’re going to be thinking about is me.”

Barnes’ writing style was superb—lyrical yet straightforward—drawing me into an enthralling journey that felt seamless and immersive. The prose flowed easily, almost pulling me into the world she created and making it challenging to put the book down. I found myself so captivated that I lost an entire night of sleep consumed in the pages of this novel, yet I can confidently say it was absolutely worth every minute of lost rest.

From the very first chapter, the plot intrigued me, setting the stage for an unfolding drama that kept building momentum as the story progressed. Each page was a new revelation, with clever little hints woven throughout the narrative that gradually pieced together the overarching mystery. While I found myself able to predict certain elements of the ending, there were layers to the storyline that remained elusive and surprising. This element of surprise was what I found both compelling and addictive. It wasn’t solely about the plot twists; rather, it was the brilliant way in which Jennifer Lynn Barnes crafted the narrative that made me question, "Why her?" This question piqued my curiosity and perpetuated my desire to continue reading.

Barnes demonstrated a masterful talent for captivating her readers. The way she kept me hooked until the very last page was impressive, expertly weaving tension and intrigue throughout. Since this book is part of a series, I appreciated the well-crafted writing and engaging storyline that left me feeling satisfied with the conclusion, even if it wasn’t what I had entirely anticipated. The ending did leave me with lingering questions and musings that I am eager to explore further. The clever hints dropped throughout the story have set me up beautifully for the next installment, illuminating the idea that just when I thought I understood the narrative, I was merely scratching the surface of something far more profound.

Overall, this book was an outstanding literary delight that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the eloquence of the writing style, the intricacies of the plot, and most importantly, the depth and complexity of the characters. The entire reading experience was a wonderful journey, leaving me both satisfied and craving more.
