Kristin Hannah

Kristin Hannah is an American author best known for her historical novels, which explore the resilience of individuals against the backdrop of tumultuous events. With over 20 books to her credit, she gained widespread acclaim for The Nightingale (2015), which won the People's Choice Award for Best Fiction and was named the Best Historical Fiction Novel of the Year by Goodreads.

In 2023, the novel was selected by the Reese Witherspoon Book Club. Her latest novel, The Women (2024), explores the turbulent era of the 1960s through the experiences of a young Army nurse in Vietnam.

Born in California and raised on Coronado Island, Kristin Hannah began her career in law, not literature. After graduating from law school, she worked as a lawyer. However, a life-changing personal experience led her to write.

She commented on her move from law to literature: "I loved the law, but writing is the best career in the world for me. I can't imagine going back to work in heels. I'd probably fall flat on my face.

Her writing career took off in the mid-1990s with her debut novel, but The Nightingale firmly established her reputation. The international bestseller, currently in production at TriStar Pictures, focuses on the lesser-known stories of women's contributions during the Second World War.

Kristin remarked, "Women can be heroes, too," a sentiment central to many of her novels. Building on this theme, her 2021 release The Four Winds also received critical acclaim, topping several bestseller lists and winning the Book of the Month Club's Book of the Year award.

In 2018, Kristin released The Great Alone, a novel set in 1970s Alaska, which immediately became a New York Times #1 bestseller. The novel explores survival and family dynamics themes amidst the wild Alaskan wilderness. TriStar has also optioned it for film, demonstrating her continued success in literature and film.

Beyond her writing, Kristin's adaptation success continued with Firefly Lane, which became a popular Netflix series in 2021. Starring Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke, the series attracted viewers worldwide, and its final season ended in April 2023. Reflecting on the adaptation of her books, she expressed her gratitude, saying, "Seeing these characters come to life is a fantastic experience.

Kristin's writing process is disciplined yet fluid. She spends about a year on each book, often drafting several versions. "I usually do about ten drafts of the book," she said, acknowledging the complexity and depth of her character-driven stories. Her ideal writing day is deeply connected to nature, where she often imagines herself by the sea, "getting lost in the story".

Kristin's most recent book, The Women (2024), focuses on Frances "Frankie" McGrath, a young nursing student who joins the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War. The novel highlights the untold stories of women in combat and explores war's profound psychological and cultural impact on those who served.

Reflecting on the inspiration for her book, Kristin said: "The world is changing, and so are the choices we make.

always thought it was what I wanted: to be loved and admired. Now I think perhaps I’d like to be known.

Leni was afraid to stay and afraid to leave. It was strange—stupid, even—but she often felt like the only adult in her family, as if she were the ballast that kept the creaky Allbright boat on an even keel.

But sometimes, especially on days like today, Leni was afraid. It felt to her as if her family stood poised on the edge of a great precipice that could collapse at any second, crumble away like the houses that crashed down Seattle’s unstable, waterlogged hillsides.
