Bethany W. Pope

Bethany W. Pope is an award-winning British-American novelist and poet known for evocative gothic narratives and contemplative poetry. Her most recent novel, The Hungry and the Lost (2021), set in the swamplands of Edwardian Florida, vividly contrasts myth and modernity, reflecting her ability to combine visceral imagery with deep emotional resonance.

Pope's work has won numerous awards, including the Luigi Bonomi Associates Prize for Fiction, and she was a finalist for the Faulkner-Wisdom Awards.

Born in the United States, Pope pursued her higher education in the United Kingdom, earning an MA from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and a PhD from Aberystwyth University, where she specialised in creative writing.

Her publications include novels, poetry collections, and articles in literary journals and magazines. Pope's work has appeared in Poetry London, The Galway Review and The Prague Review.

Bethany W Pope has published several well-received collections, including A Radiance (2012), Crown of Thorns (2013), and The Gospel of Flies (2014). Her poetry is known for examining personal trauma and the human experience, often exploring themes of pain, memory and resilience.

Her candid reflections on writing about her own life, which she describes as "like dancing naked behind a sheet of bulletproof glass", underline her commitment to vulnerability and authenticity in her work.

In her debut novel, Masque (2016), she established herself as a versatile storyteller capable of weaving complex narratives.

Her most recent work, The Hungry and the Lost (2021) continues this trajectory, immersing readers in a richly atmospheric setting where survival and innocence collide. Set in the mosquito-infested swamps of Tampa, Florida, the novel follows Joy, a young woman navigating the challenges of a decaying city and the arrival of the ruthless Johnson family.

An avid fencer specialising in sabre, small sword and backsword, Pope balances her literary pursuits with her interests in hiking and comic books.

Bethany W Pope currently resides in the UK with her husband, Matthew.
