Amory Blaine is a young Midwesterner attending Princeton University. He meets Isabelle Borgé, a youthful lady, and starts a romantic relationship with her, but they become dissatisfied after a while. Amory is sent overseas, to serve in the army in World War I. Will he survive? Will he find love again, one day?
