The Scarlet Plague is a dystopian novel published by Jack London in 1915. It is about the aftermath of life after most of humanity was killed by a devastating disease called the Red Death or Scarlet Death or Scarlet Plague. The story now takes place in the year 2073, sixty years after the spread of the disease and is set in a ravaged and wild America. It follows the story of James Howard Smith who is one of the few survivors of the plague. He travels with his near-savaged grandsons and tells them the story about how the pandemic happened and ultimately depopulated the planet. Smith was worried that he might be one of the last ones who can still remember the times before the plague and thus, wanted to impart the knowledge to his grandsons. However, his stories sounded so farfetched to them that they didn’t really believe him. The story has similarities with the Covid-19 pandemic that is happening today.
